Greater Houlton Chamber of Commerce
Upcoming Schedule of Events and
The success of the events listed is not measured by the amount of money made or lost but by the number of people who are encouraged to visit our community. The Chamber continues to have an ambitious plan for 2020 and hopes to enhance the current list of events while creating new ones as well. We have a very active board and the support of the community and are looking forward to the New Year.
Recognizing that an active community benefits everyone in the Greater Houlton area the following is a list of Chamber sponsored events for the New Year.
Success in 60
October, December, February, and March the Chamber hosts a lecture series in partnership with Southern Aroostook Development Corp. called Success in 60. This free lecture series on the second or third Wednesday of the month are based on topics to enhance business practices. A light lunch is served.
March 14, The Chamber’s Annual Dinner and Gala Event has become the Board of Directors gift to our members as well as one of our best fundraisers. The evening begins with a cocktail hour and hors d’oeuvres served at 6 pm by a wait staff comprised of seniors from the Houlton Higher Education Center. Dinner is served at 7:00 and is cooked by the Board of Directors. Dessert follows with the Annual Report, Awards Ceremony, and an always exciting auction to finish the evening.
May 2, the Meduxnekeag River Canoe Race has been part of Houlton’s history, for over 35 years. The event for which paddlers “from away” praise the Town of Houlton and its collaborative spirit, hosts over 100 paddlers. Our friends from outside the County love that we give away Aroostook County potatoes as parting gifts and say it’s the best part of the day!

The Black Fly Brewfest is held at the Millar Civic Center and welcomes over 30 brewers and wineries from throughout the State of Maine to our small town. The event is kicked off with a cocktail party on Friday for brewers and possible local suppliers at Shiretown Inn and Suites. Saturday morning will host a Corn Hole tournament with the main tasting event beginning at 1:00. This event has grown over 5 years and in 2020 hopes to host over 500 ticket holders who will enjoy over 120 selections.
Houlton Community Market
Community Market will be starting on May 23 but will not be open to Crafters until the first weekend in July barring any changes in the Covid-19 response. At this point vendors with food, vegetables, plants, and any other product deemed essential will still be there . (Sorry ladies ear rings are not essential even when hand crafted).
July 4 - The 4th of July Parade was happily taken over by the Chamber in 2014 and has become one of our favorites. The parade started at 10:00 a.m. in the parking lot of the Catholic Church on Main St. and is a mile-long loop through Historic Market Square, into Union Square and back up Military St. The last entry leaves the parking lot at the same time the first entry returns making it a true mile long parade!
July 1 - Midnight Madness has become the definitive event for the Town of Houlton. We will kick off the event with strawberry shortcake deliveries to local businesses and continued through the afternoon and evening with vendors in Market Square, musical performances, a road race, and the ever popular fireworks over the Gateway Bridge at 9:30. Over the years the event has become less of a shopping opportunity and more of a street fair which seems to work well for the community. Crowds number in the thousands.
July 4 - Arts and Crafts Fair in Monument Park this year coincides with the 4th of July Parade and the Houlton Ag Fair which gives the community another event to enjoy over the holiday weekend.
August 8 - Houlton International Wings & Wheels Fly-in Cruise-In was developed as a means to showcase the Houlton International Airport and make the community aware of this wonderful asset. Private and commercial planes, helicopters will be part of the morning and we hope to host a free breakfast for all who fly in as well as the community. 2020 is in the early planning stages but we do plan on having more child friendly activities.
August 21 & 22 - Annual Potato Feast Days is kicked off on Friday by the Doll and Wagon Wrangler Parade, touch-a-truck, a Lobster Feast in Monument Park as well as music in the Amphitheater. This is a great start for a weekend which includes Community Market, a Craft Fair, kid’s games in Market Square, an ice cream social and a phenomenal Quilt Show. We estimate the weekend crowd at around 3000.
September 12 – Harvest Festival is a small event to celebrate the Houlton Community Market and the bountiful farmers on our area. The Chamber of Commerce is happy to provide support for this fun family event.
October 3 & 4, The Southern Aroostook Trade Show is a highly anticipated event held every spring in the Millar Civic Center. 45 Vendors setting up displays with attendance averaging 1800 people gives our business community a chance to showcase their product.
October 31, Halloween in Market Square
There is mischief brewing in Market Square on October 31 from 5 to 7. Join in the fun as Bastions Tavern and the Chamber of Commerce bring Halloween to downtown Houlton.
This will be the second year that Local businesses and organizations will be set up for trick-or-treating.
November 28 – Holiday Light Parade is held on the Saturday following Thanksgiving at 6:00 p.m. Local businesses decorate floats with lights, costumed walkers sing and dance their way through the parade route music and Santa and Mrs. Claus light the Christmas tree and be available to hear the children’s Christmas wishes after the parade.
